Abstract

Behavioral methods of conception control or contraception are being met with increasing interest (WHO 1981) and constitute a growing — though still very small — segment of family planning methods: In recent surveys in Austria and the Federal Republic of Germany, 2.8% reported the use of basal body temperature (BBT) (Münz 1987) and 3.9% the use of natural family planning (NFP), with 14% stating their intention to practise such methods in the future (Döring 1986 b). Contrary to previous calendar methods (Knaus 1933; Ogino 1932), modern self-observation methods (SOM) like the symptothermal method (STM) (Rötzer 1986) are safe and reliable (Döring 1986 a; Frank and Raith 1985; Rice 1981; Rötzer 1968, 1978a, 1978b, 1986).
