Imported Disease in Australia: An Ongoing Problem

  • Chapter
Travel Medicine

Abstract

Australia was for centuries isolated from outside influences, including infectious disease, by its geographical position and its surrounding sea barriers. The year 1988 marks the bicentenary of one of the most significant events in the history of the continent — its settlement in 1788 by Europeans — an event which marked the start of a long history of disease importation.
