Those in charge of formulating recommendations for malaria prophylaxis in short-term travelers must know the:

  • Incidence rate of (falciparum) malaria in travelers to various destinations

  • Case fatality rate of Plasmodium falciparum infection

  • Toxicity of the drugs used

  • Chemoprophylactic efficacy

Many of these data are not yet available.
