Reported Illness and Compliance in United States Travelers Attending an Immunization Facility

Abstract

In a retrospective study conducted at Long Island Jewish Medical Center in New York City, 214 travelers were interviewed by telephone. Data collected included the following: age, duration of trip, month of departure, countries visited, purpose of trip, vaccinations prior to traveling, illnesses and symptoms during their trip, visits to foreign physicians or hospitals, need for antidiarrheal antibiotics, duration of diarrhea, number of mosquito bites suffered, use of insect repellent, and assessment of chloroquine compliance. In addition, women of menstrual age were questioned regarding menstrual irregularities during or after their trip.
