Abstract
The naturally occurring mineral asbestos is known to constitute an occupational as well as environmental health hazard leading to lung fibrosis and two types of cancer: mesothelioma and pulmonary carcinoma. Smoking potentiates the risk of lung cancer. The responsible components of cigarette smoke have so far not been identified, though polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons have been suspected.
