On The Emission of Fibrous Particles from Corroded Asbestos-Cement Products

Abstract

Asbestos cement products, e.g. roof tiles, contain as much as 11 to 15% of chrysotile or amphibole asbestos. As a result of the continuing exposure to meteorologic influences such as acid rain, sunshine, wind, frost etc., as well as to aggressive atmospheric pollutants, the surface of asbestos cement products corrodes and weathers. Thus, cement particles and asbestos fibers are released from the surface and disperse in air and rain water. Asbestos is a carcinogenic substance, and its emissions as well as its atmospheric concentrations need to be measured.
