Abstract
In the early 1960’s it was reported that injected cadmium compounds can induce tumors at injection sites in rats and mice. It was later discovered that besides the site of injection tumors could also be induced in testes and pancreas. With regard to the respiratory tract, chronic inhalation of CdCl2 aerosols were found to induce lung tumors in rats (1). Long-term inhalation studies with CdO, CdS and CdS04 designed after the study of Takenaka et al. resulted also in the induction of lung tumors (2). Thus, it appears that inhalation of many different cadmium compounds in the rat can induce lung tumors.
