Abstract

Hydrolases or hydrolytic enzymes catalyze the breakdown of substrates (e.g. esters, glycosides, and peptides) using water:
$${\rm{AB + }}{{\rm{H}}_{\rm{2}}}{\rm{O}} \mathbin{\lower.3ex\hbox{$\buildrel\textstyle\rightarrow\over{\smash{\leftarrow}\vphantom{_{\vbox to.5ex{\vss}}}}$}} {\rm{HA + B - OH}}$$
For the purposes of this account it is sufficient to note that the plasma membrane and lysosomes are prominent locations for hydrolytic enzymes.
