Zusammenfassung

Der Gebrauch des Wortes „Demenz“ impliziert im Deutschen häufig eine im späteren Leben erworbene bleibende Geistesschwäche, der meist ein organischer Hirnprozeß zugrundeliegt (Wörterbuch der Medizin Zetkin-Schaldach). Im angloamerikanischen Sprachgebrauch wird der Ausdruck „Dementia“ weiträumiger gefaßt. Er stellt die allgemeine Benennung für Abnahme der geistigen Leistungsfähigkeit dar (Dorland’s Medical Dictionary). Die unterschiedlichen semantischen Ansätze und der tatsächliche klinische Gebrauch im deutschen und anglo-amerikanischen Sprachraum sind an anderer Stelle kompetenter behandelt.
