Abstract

A definition of an ecosystem is:a biological community and its abiotic environment (FAO 1978, Zijlstra 1988). Ecosystems are usually defined on a geographic basis (the North Sea ecosystem) and the biotic part is described in terms of structure (species, number of species, communities, species density, populations) and functions (primary and secondary production, food and energy transfer, mineralization, respiration, etc.). Here we will deal with both structural and functional aspects of the North Sea ecosystem.
