Abstract

The impact of pollution and other kinds of human interference on the marine environment may take either of two extreme forms, i.e., mass mortalities or a slow and gradual change in the size of populations. However, such mortalities or changes may also occur under the influence of natural events and the effects may be similar, causing a sudden, often conspicuous catastrophic mortality in part of the marine biota or resulting in a slow change in the abundance of a population. Such gradual changes may either be the result of an alteration in mortality rates, experienced in the subadult and adult part of a population or, more often, be due to changes in the reproductive success, affecting recruitment.
