Abstract
Every process going on in the material world has a built-in tendency toward disorganization, i.e. any degree of organization achieved will be progressively offset by decay unless adequate work is invested in its maintenance. Living systems actively oppose decay in various ways, but the mechanisms for tissue and cell maintenance are themselves susceptible to disruption, and ageing ensues, affecting not only somatic functions but also cognition, memory, behavior and affectivity.
