Zero-Phonon Lines in the Spectra of Small Impurity Molecules as an Indicator of Electron-Phonon Interactions in Crystals

Abstract

Low-temperature spectra of small molecular anions O2 -, S2 -, NO2 - in alkali halide crystals are reviewed as model systems for the theory of the spectra and electron-phonon interactions of impurity centres in crystals. Zero-phonon lines of intramolecular transitions as well as the dependences of their contours on the crystal’s temperature and defect concentration have been analyzed. The participation of the impurity’s rotational and librational modes in the relaxation of the excited state and in the broadening of zero-phonon lines has been elucidated.
