Abstract
The general properties of cooperative spontaneous emission are discussed and a conclusion is drawn that an impurity crystal with intensive zero-phonon lines can be used as a source of superradiance. An analysis of the experiments on the amplification of spontaneous emission (close to superfluorescence) in impurity crystals is made. A threshold condition for superfluorescence is obtained. It gives the estimation of the possibility of superfluorescence in real systems. The advantages of the induced superradiance are discussed.
