Plant Protoplasts and Genetic Engineering I

Part of the book series: Biotechnology in Agriculture and Forestry ((AGRICULTURE,volume 8))

Abstract

Potato, Solarium tuberosum, is one of the most important crops in the temperate climate zones. It occupies the fifth position among the cultivated plant species with respect to yield and the fourth position as measured by area of cultivation (Barocka and Ross 1985). The present annual production amounts to about 300 million t harvested on about 22 million ha (Geisler 1983). The cultivation is being increased, particularly in developing countries. It tolerates all climate zones, from temperate to tropic, and from humid to arid.
