Abstract

The effect of the α-glucosidase inhibitor acarbose on metabolic control was studied in insulin-dependent diabetics who were accustomed to home monitoring of blood glucose levels and to adapting their insulin dose. Following informed consent 20 patients took part in the 4-week run-in period under placebo treatment. Thereafter they were treated for 8 weeks with thrice-daily 100 mg acarbose po; this was followed by another 4-week placebo treatment.
