Abstract

Several studies have shown that acarbose improves the metabolic control of type II diabetic patients when administered with sulfonylurea treatment. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the potential benefit of acarbose in association with sulfonylurea and biguanide. Twenty-eight patients (age, 51 ± 9 years; actual body weight, 119 ± 7% of IBW; duration of diabetes, 7.3 ± 1.4 years) with poorly controlled type II diabetes (fasting blood glucose > 7 mmol/L, postprandial value > 10 mmol/L) despite diet and maximal oral therapy (sulfonylurea plus biguanide) were included in the study.
