Abstract

The topic for this session is functional neurosurgery and psychosurgery. Dr. Gybels will describe techniques for electrical stimulation of the brain, evaluation of normal pathways in the human nervous system, psychosurgery for the management of mental disorders, and some aspects of transplantation in the central nervous system. These subjects raise questions concerning the appropriateness of animal models and ethics. It will be useful to compare national perceptions, understanding, and acceptance of these procedures.
