Abstract
A number of pharmacologic treatments have been established as effective in blocking the recurrent panic attacks experienced by patients with panic disorder or who have agoraphobia with panic attacks. However, the immediate and long-term posttreatment course in this patient group has only begun to be systematically investigated. Among patients commonly seen in treatment settings, panic attacks have a pattern of lifetime episodic recurrence (Breier et al. 1985; Uhde et al. 1985). Therefore, questions concerning issues such as the occurrence of withdrawal symptoms during drug discontinuation, the rates of and risk factors for post-discontinuation relapse, and the consequences of continuous long-term treatment are of both clinical and theoretical importance.
