Abstract
In 1976, 88 000 patients with a breast carcinoma were registered in the USA and 33 000 died of breast cancer [81]. In 1982,112 000 new cases and 37 000 deaths were estimated [55]. In the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG) in 1978, 11 790 women died of breast cancer, corresponding to 36/100 000 or 15.1% of all female cancer deaths [4]. By 1985, the number of breast cancer deaths had increased to over 15 000, representing 18% of all cancer deaths in women [75] (Fig. 1). In Central and Western Europe, from 1956 until 1975, the frequency of breast cancer has increased by 20%, i.e., by 1% per year. A decrease in mortality has only been observed in some Far Eastern countries and in Norway [4]. In the FRG, mortality is increasing continuously in almost all age groups. Between 1952 and 1982, there was a marked increase in mortality among those over 50 and especially over 70 (Fig. 2).
