Abstract

Paspalum is a large grass genus of the tropics and warm temperate regions, especially of the New World. The relatively few species not native to the Americas are mostly related to P. scrobiculatum L., the Kodo millet, which is harvested as a wild cereal in West Africa and in India. It was domesticated in India some 3000 years ago (de Wet et al. 1983). A number of species native to the Western Hemisphere are important constituents of native pasture in South America and the West Indies. Wild species like P. dilatatum Poir., P. guenoarum Arech., and P. notatum Fl. are also cultivated for forage purposes in Brazil, Paraguay, Argentina and Uruguay, and have been introduced especially into the USA and Australia.
