Abstract
Platelet-activating factor (PAF) is a potent mediator of inflammatory processes produced by platelets, polymorphonuclear leukocytes, and macrophages (reviewed in [1, 2]). Several antagonists of PAF have been described [3], among which some are extracted from Ginkgo biloba leaves [4]. These substances, namely BN 52020, BN 52021, and 52022, inhibit PAF-induced platelet aggregation, the most potent one being BN 52021 (ginkgolide B) [5]. Stimulated macrophages released both PAF [2] and interleukin (IL)1 [6]. The involvement of IL1 in many aspects of the immune response suggests that this mediator is also an important regulatory molecule of the inflammatory reactions [6]. However, the possible link between the generation of PAF and IL1 has not yet been considered.
