Abstract
On July 1, 1986, work started on the drilling of a deep borehole at Gravberg in the granite cupola of the Siljan Ring structure in central Sweden. The objective of the drilling, operated by the Swedish State Power Board has been to explore a possible major hydrocarbon deposit of mantle origin. This project constitutes the first ever fullscale test of the abiogenic deep gas theory, the commercial importance of which has been the subject of lively debate during recent years.
