Zusammenfassung
Unter Charakter wird die habituelle Form von Verhaltensweisen verstanden, die insgesamt einem Individuum eigen sind. Daraus entsteht eine Voraussagbarkeit von Bewältigungsmechanismen und oder bevorzugten Abwehrmechanismen in Belastungssituationen. Vaillant u. Drake (1985) publizierten eine Untersuchung, in der der Frage nachgegangen wurde, welche Verhaltensweisen — sowohl bewußt wie unbewußt — günstig für Männer zwischen 50 und 60 Jahren im Hinblick auf die Gesundheit seien. Sie fanden 3 Charaktereigenschaften: die Fähigkeit zum Humor, die Fähigkeit bei Problemen auch die Alternativen durchzudecken, die Fähigkeit zu Altruismus. Nachteilig für die Gesundheit waren unreife Abwehrmechanismen wie Splitting, Projektion und Acting out.
