Das folgende Zitat veranschaulicht, auf welchen Annahmen die Copingforschung, die Erforschung von Bewältigungsprozessen, beruht. Es stammt von R. S. Lazarus, der vor ca. 20 Jahren die systematische Erforschung von Bewältigungsprozessen mitbegründet hat (Lazarus 1966) und ihr seither mit seiner Forschungsgruppe an der Universität Berkeley, Kalifornien, weitere, entscheidende Impulse gegeben hat.
