Abstract
Because of the types of reconnaissance techniques employed and the limitations mentioned above, only certain aspects of the belt can be taken up in this chapter. Emphasis is laid, above all, on the definition of external boundaries and the large-scale structures encountered within the belt, as well as the distribution of basic material; this latter is the only convenient criterion which exists to recognize the Iapetus suture. Since the major units of the submerged mobile belt have only very rarely been sampled, there is generally a great reliance on geophysical arguments in the following presentation.
