Part of the book series: Advances in Applied Neurological Sciences ((NEUROLOGICAL,volume 5))

Abstract

Headache and drug dependency are reciprocally related. Headache can, through the consumption of analgesics, lead to drug abuse and to barbiturate-alcoholtype addiction. In rare cases this mechanism can even result in morphine-type addiction. On the other hand, addiction, as is well known, can lead to chronic headache (Dichgans et al. 1984; Ladewig 1984). Here we want to discuss the psychiatric aspects of barbiturate-alcohol-type dependency. This is sensible given the fact that among drug addicts, the barbiturate-alcohol type is the most common.
