p53: Molecular Properties and Biological Activities

  • Chapter
Oncogenes and Growth Control

Abstract

The p53 cellular tumor antigen is a phosphoprotein which is overproduced in a wide variety of neoplastic cells (reviewed by Klein 1982; Crawford 1983; Rotter and Wolf 1984). High p53 mRNA levels are also seen in certain nonmalignant cells, including embryonic tissue and exponentially growing, non-transformed cultured cell lines, but expression is low in most adult organs (Dippold et al. 1981; Rogel et al. 1985). This chapter reviews the evidence which suggests that p53 plays a role both in normal cell proliferation and in neoplastic transformation. It also discusses the question of how p53 expression levels are regulated.
