Abstract
Few clinical syndromes are as frustrating to the critical care specialist as the adult respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). Its pathogenesis is frequently obscure. Current therapy is entirely supportive. The clinical course is unpredictable. Interventional strategies, often initially promising, have proven disappointing. Finally, the high mortality rate has not been demonstrably improved despite several decades of effort.
