Zusammenfassung
“Chronic pain” is a phrase which denotes misery to the sufferer and failure of treatment to the clinician. For the dancer, it may additionally presage the premature loss of a profession. The purpose of this article is to describe the sometimes unusual response to pain exhibited by the professional ballet or modern dancer; to propose a clinically based theory on the origins of chronic pain in the dancer; to suggest treatment-protocols that might be included in rehabilitation of musculoskeletal injuries implicated in chronic pain; and to outline a program of education for the dancer to help avoidance of chronic pain episodes in the future.
