Production and Measurement of Interferons

The Pharmacology of Lymphocytes

Part of the book series: Handbook of Experimental Pharmacology ((HEP,volume 85))

Abstract

Interferons (IFNs) are a set of protein molecules which can be considered as lymphokines (LKs) in that they are produced by and act upon lymphoid organs and cells. However, one can also regard them as a separate system in view of the fact that some of the IFNs can be produced by and respond to nonlymphoid cells. IFNs are a diverse set of molecules, each of which has unique features. One of the most important properties of the whole IFN family is their ability to induce antiviral activity in target cells. It is this unique ability that led to the discovery of the IFNs nearly three decades ago.
