Summary

Comparison of 2% hydroxypropylmethylcellulose (HPMC) with 1% sodium hyalurouate (Healon) in cataract surgery.HPMC was examined in the laboratory and clinically compared with sodium hyaluronate. The two tested solutions of HPMC — one prepared by a hospital pharmacy, the other provided by a pharmaceutical company (Adatocel) — proved to be free of corpuscular elements and allergenic materials. In a clinical comparison of Adatocel with Healon it was shown that the inflammation after extracapsular cataract operation with lens implantation was equal with either material.
