Trophic Behaviour — Session Summary

While preparing this summary from the recording of the session, I was surprised by the many interesting details I had since forgotten. What struck me most, however, was the enthusiasm generated by the lecturers and participants in this session. The degree of empathy for protozoan “pets” that was shown was remarkable considering that protists are supposed to be comparatively “simple” organisms. The quality of this empathy was most clearly reflected in the choice of words and gestures employed by the speakers during their presentations. Thus, vivid visual impressions conveyed by these means were greeted by audible appreciation from the audience. Liberal use of adjectives such as “enormous”, “huge” and “giant” (with accompanying hand-waving) applied to the protozoa clearly demonstrate that the contributors had transported themselves — and the audience — to the size scales of their “animals”, an obvious pre-requisite for empathy. As expressions such as these tend not to appear in scientific journals and are quickly forgotten by the audience, I have taken the liberty of sprinkling some of them in the text (in inverted commas).
