Abstract

When plant tissues are treated with host-selective toxins, as well as with some non-selective toxins, ions leak out. This is strong evidence that the selective permeability of the plasma membrane is affected by these compounds. Leakage occurs in very early phases of pathogenesis, and the plasma membrane is a likely site of primary contact. A role for membranes in the recognition of the pathogen and in disease specificity, i.e., the recognition of the self and/or non-self, thus is likely (Wheeler, 1976; Yoder, 1980; Daly 1981, 1982 and Scheffer, 1976).
