Spontaneous Release of Acetylcholine from Torpedo Electromotor Neurons

Part of the book series: NATO ASI Series ((ASIH,volume 21))

Abstract

Acetylcholine (ACh) is released from cholinergic nerve terminals both spontaneously and by presynaptic stimulation. Evoked ACn release is Ca2+ dependent and quantal (DelCastillo & Katz, 1954), whereas basal ACh release is Ca2+ independent and is distinct from the randomly occurring miniature end plate potentials (MEPPs) which account for only a few percent of the spontaneously released ACh (Katz & Miledi, 1977).
