Abstract

Neuronal sensitivity to nerve growth factor (NGF) is conferred by the presence of specific high affinity receptors (Stach and Perez-Polo, 1987). Based on immunocytochemical and autoradiographic stud ies of adult rat and human brains, NGF receptors (NGF-R) are known to be present on cholinergic neurons located in the basal forebrain and on their terminals in the neocortex and hippocampus (Schwab et al., 1979; Seiler and Schwab, 1984; Hefti et al., 1986; Richardson et al., 1986; Johnson et al., 1987; Raivich and Kreutzberg, 1987; Springer et al, 1987; Loy et al, in press). In addition, measurement of NGF-R by immunoprecipitation reveals the presence of significant quantities of NGF-R in rat cerebellum, thalamus, olfactory bulb, and particularly in the brainstem (Taniuchi et al., 1986b). Recently, NGF-R have also been identified autoradiographically on a variety of neurons in the rat brainstem, including those of the cochlear nucleus and nucleus of the lateral lemniscus, components of the auditory system, suggesting that some central sensory neurons may be sensitive to NGF (Richardson et al., 1986; Raivich and Kreutzberg, 1987).
