Abstract

The overall energy intensity in terms of the ratio between total primary energy required (TPE) and gross domestic product has improved since 1973. Considering the statistical raw data the average rate of improvement for EUR-12 was almost 2% per year between 1973 and 1983. In 1984 and 1985, however, overall energy intensity worsened by 0.5% per year (see Fig. 1.1).
