Abstract

Photoreactive furocoumarins (psoralens), such as 8-methoxypsoralen (8-MOP) and 5-methoxypsoralen (5-MOP), present in many plant extracts (Scott et al. 1976), are used in the photochemotherapeutic treatment (PUVA) of psoriasis and other skin disorders (Parrish et al. 1982) and in cosmetology (Suzuki et al. 1979). Thus, the evaluation of photomutagenic effects of psoralens is an important task with respect to long-term effects (Averbeck 1984; Ben-Hur and Song 1984; Scott et al. 1976) which may arise in humans (Stern 1984).
