F.D.M.Haldane [1] has proposed that the properties of Heisenberg antiferromagnetic linear chains depend in a major way on whether the spins have integer (s=1,2,…) or half-integer (s=1/2,3/2,…) magnitudes. One important consequence concerns the existence of an energy gap at the isotropy point (Jx=Jy=Jz), with all that this entails for the correlation functions and the low-temperature properties.
