Operative Technique

  • Chapter
Surgery of the Skull Base

Abstract

This technique provides good anterior exposure of C1 and C2 on the midline, and the surgical morbidity is low. The main disadvantage is the necessity of working through an unsterile area, which poses an increased risk of infection when incision of the dura is required. The approach is particularly suited for exposure of the dens (Verbiest 1961, 1977), dens fractures, and basilar invagination.
