Abstract

The physicochemical modifications of alginic acid in an acid medium result in the formation of a gel capable of floating on top of the acid fluid level. This property is used in the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux, as the gel obtained isolates the gastric and esophageal mucosae from the aggressive effect of the gastric contents, in particular hydrochloric acid and pepsin. Topaal (Laboratoires Sinbio), a treatment for gastroesophageal reflux, contains, in addition to alginic acid, substances with an antacid activity.
