Abstract

Seed plant systematics and economic botany have formed closer links in recent years. This is reflected not only by joint symposia of mutual interest (e. g. infraspecific classification), but also the increase of respective publications may well be an indication of funding favouring applied rather than basic research. The study of seed plant phylogeny has greatly benefited from the close integration of palaeontological and neontological data, and from their critical analysis. Cladistic methodology has proven to be a valuable research tool once the narrow classificatory approach is abandoned. Comparative DNA analysis has been used to resolve speciation events and phylogenies, but it is questionable whether such methods will serve as a panacea for all cases of conflicting evidence (if there is any at all). Among the groups in focus, Myrtales (p. 320). Hamamelidales (p. 319), Rubiaceae and Brome- liaceae may be mentioned. Biosystimatics has proceeded further towards becoming a multidiscipline to be mastered only by research teams of increasing size. But still, progress in systematics relies considerably on comprehensive studies by individuals: Burmanniaceae (RÜBSAMEN 1986) and Lysimachia (VOGEL 1986) provide exemplary cases.
