Abstract
Surgery connected with implantation of ports and pumps is simple and the procedure itself is a minor one. As for all minor procedures it is important, however, to pay attention to every detail in order to minimize the complications. This begins with adequate preparation of skin and finishes with correct skin closure. The technique of subcutaneous implantation of a pump may be compared with implantation of the cardiac pace-maker [2], and intrathecal positioning of the catheter has much in common as far as technique and complications are concerned with the technique of placement of lumbo-peritoneal shunts [1]. Thus, the problems encountered in connection with implantation of pumps delivering a drug into subarachnoid space are similar to those of both aforementioned operations.
