Abstract
Injuries to the soft tissue passageway are probably the most common single complication during human birth. The 1984 figures of the North-Rhine Perinatal Study which represents 77 hospitals contributing data on more than 50,000 deliveries show that an episiotomy is performed in about 75% of all vaginal deliveries. Lacerations to perineum and vagina occur in 18% of vaginal deliveries, either in addition to an episiotomy or in cases where the attending obstetrician tried to keep the perineum intact.
