The influence of premature rupture of membranes (PROM) on the course of labor

Abstract

It is a common belief in obstetrics today that early loss of the amniotic fluid which surrounds and protects the fetus leads to rapid labor progression and rapid delivery. Consequently, early artificial rupture of the membranes has been used to start labor at term (1,2,3). Induction of labor with oxytocin and early artificial rupture of the membranes has been called “programming of delivery” and has been recommended by outstanding perinatologists (1,2,3,4).
