Zusammenfassung

Die Bindehaut bekleidet die Innenseite der Lider und die Augapfelvorderfläche bis zum Limbus. Sie stellt biologisch eine Schleimhaut dar, die Auge und Orbita vor schädlichen Umwelteinflüssen schützt, indem sie eine mechanische Barriere bildet und wichtige Aufgaben in der unspezifischen und spezifischen Infektabwehr übernimmt, nicht zuletzt durch ihre Beteiligung beim Außau des Tränenfilms. So sorgt eine gesunde Bindehaut für ein zuträgliches Oberflächenmilieu des Auges, was wiederum eine wesentliche Voraussetzung für Transparenz und optische Güte der Hornhaut ist.
