Abstract
Coastal mines have the option of disposing of their tailings and waste rock to the sea instead of on land. Marine mines, either nearshore or offshore, inevitably must dispose of their wastes to the sea. Such disposal can potentially contaminate or preclude marine fisheries, and affect tourism, recreation and public health. It is known that some marine discharging mines have avoided such impacts and others have not. Accordingly, it is important to document cases of actual experience so that the information is available for impact prediction and mitigation of new mine sites.
