Zusammenfassung

Im Jahre 1928 erschien im Bumkeschen Handbuch der Geisteskrankheiten Johannes Langes Kapitel über „Die endogenen und reaktiven Gemütserkrankungen und die manisch-depressive Konstitution“. Im letzten Abschnitt dieser 231 Seiten umfassenden Übersicht machte Lange (1891–1938), Schüler Kraepelins und späterer Ordinarius für Neurologie und Psychiatrie in Breslau, sich Gedanken über „Das Wesen des manisch-depressiven Irreseins“. Auf der Suche nach einem Geschehen mit ähnlich phasenhaftem Verlauf fand er Parallelen in dem bei manchen Säugern beobachteten Phänomen des Winterschlafs, das darüber hinaus, wie er glaubte, eine der Depression vergleichbare Reduktion der Motorik, des Metabolismus und der Fortpflanzung aufwies und, wie diese, zentralnervös organisiert und erblich fixiert war. Er vermutete, daß die Depression eine dem Winterschlaf entsprechende, „pathologisch verzerrte Äußerung ursprünglicher, in der Stammesgeschichte sinnvoller Einrichtungen“ sein könnte.
