Zusammenfassung
In den vergangenen 30 Jahren, seit dem Nachweis des Serotonins (5-Hydroxytryptamin = 5-HT) im Zentralnervensystem (Twarog u. Page 1953; Amin et al. 1954), wurde durch die Untersuchungen zahlreicher Arbeitsgruppen der Stoffwechsel des 5-HT im Gehirn aufgeklärt (zur Übersicht s. Garattini u. Valzelli 1965) und die Transmitterfunktion wahrscheinlich gemacht (zur Übersicht s. Wesemann 1974). Es konnte gezeigt werden, daß das 5-HT an der Regulation der Schlaf-Wach-Funktionen beteiligt ist (Jouvet 1977) und vermutlich eine Rolle bei der Depression und bei Streßreaktionen spielt. Über welche Mechanismen 5-HT in diese physiologischen bzw. pathophysiologischen Funktionen eingreift, ist in den Details weithin unbekannt.
