Zusammenfassung
Die Prävention und die Behandlung der Infektionskrankheiten, bessere Hygiene sowie Frühdiagnose und -behandlung von Hypertonie und Neoplasien führten in den meisten Industriestaaten zu einer Veränderung der Morbiditäts- und Mortalitätsstatistik. So nahmen in den USA während der letzten 10–15 Jahre die Herz- und Kreislauferkrankungen wesentlich ab (Walker 1983; Pell u. Fayerweather 1985). In den Jahren von 1975 bis 1981 ist die Lebenserwartung für einen neugeborenen Knaben um 1¾ Jahre und für ein neugeborenes Mädchen um 1¼ Jahre angestiegen (Statistics Canada 1979–1980). In der gleichen Zeit nahm die Lebenserwartung einer 65jährigen Frau um 1 Jahr, von 18 auf 19 Jahre, und die eines 65jährigen Mannes um ¾ Jahre zu (Metropolitan Life Insurance Co. 1980). Diese Ergebnisse können nur teilweise mit der verbesserten medizinischen Versorgung erklärt werden (Frame 1986).
